Corporate Movers vs. Local Movers
Not all moving companies are the same. If you're planning a corporate or commercial move, understanding the difference between a licensed interstate carrier and a local mover is critical to protecting your assets, timeline, and budget.
Licensing and Legal Authorization
A licensed interstate carrier operates under FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations with a USDOT number and MC number — authorizing them to transport goods across state lines with required insurance minimums. Local movers typically operate within a single state and may not carry the insurance or licensing required for interstate commercial operations.
Insurance and Liability
Interstate carriers like Relocation Services LLC (USDOT 3676929, MC 1277286) are required to maintain minimum levels of liability insurance. Local movers may carry only state-minimum coverage — which in many cases is insufficient for high-value corporate, medical, or industrial assets.
Project Management Capability
Corporate moves require phased scheduling, asset tagging, COI coordination, building management communication, and multi-department sequencing. Most local movers are equipped for point-A-to-point-B transport, not project management. That gap is where downtime, damage, and missed deadlines happen.
Crew Experience and Training
A corporate moving crew needs to understand freight elevator protocols, loading dock scheduling, floor protection, and how to handle IT equipment and specialized assets. Background-checked, uniformed crews are table stakes for corporate and healthcare environments — and not always available from local operators.
When a Local Mover Might Be Fine
For a small residential move within the same metro area, a reputable local mover may be perfectly adequate. But for a corporate, medical, or industrial relocation — especially across state lines — the risk of using an unlicensed or underqualified crew typically outweighs any cost savings.
